Brand redesign project from last spring for the Museo Archeologioco Nazionale di Firenze (MAF) with professor
Silvia Aggozzino.

During this semester-long project, I spent several weeks researching and sketching the museum to understand how to best represent its identity through my designs. Located in Palazzo della Crocetta, MAF thoughtfully brings together a collection of Italic, Greek, and Egyptian excavations into a unique historical system accessible to the public eye. The museum’s brand identity reflects this synthetic system of the three main collections using blocks. In the logo, there are three blocks positioned in a grid next to each other with the signature letters MAF; each block also representing a third of the museum’s collections. The three-block repetition continues into an icon system with a distinct visual symbol for each of the main three categories of historical artifacts.

The Museo Archeologioco Nazionale di Firenze is also a beloved location for children and frequent school visits. Throughout the brand identity, the system of blocks accumulates and builds upon each other to form larger patterns within a grid. The blocks allude to the simple children’s game. Sometimes the grid is more filled in, and other times, many blocks appear empty or without an icon symbol. This composition also evokes the same sensation of the accumulation of knowledge to unlock a complete picture of a subject — slowly filling in gaps as you learn more about history.
